Conservation benefit: Installation of mooring buoys

Date Approved: 09.1999

Ocean

This project protects ocean ecosystems, making coastal communities more economically and physically secure in the face of climate change.

The ocean surrounding Vava’u is one of the premier yachting areas in the entire South Pacific. Constant dropping of anchors, however, is taking its toll on the area’s coral reefs. This grant has enabled volunteers to construct permanent mooring buoys, eliminating the need for boats to drop anchors on the reef.

Project Updates

November 2003

The two moorings have been constructed and installed.
