Frequently asked questions
Why sponsor Seacology?
Seacology is unique because we work only on islands and directly with island communities across the globe. Unlike most nonprofits, each Seacology project is identified and led by local communities, fostering buy-in for all parties. When you support Seacology, you directly improve the lives of island communities, safeguard endangered plants and animals, and grow sustainable economies.
What makes Seacology projects successful?
We believe that environmental issues are human issues. When an island community wants to protect a forest or marine area, we offer a grant that will benefit the whole community—for example, a school, ecotourism center, or water system.
This win-win approach recognizes the efforts of local communities and gives them an economic incentive to preserve their natural resources. It also recognizes that indigenous communities—who are often ignored by governments and decisionmakers—can be the best stewards of the environment.
In other words, Seacology couples the self-direction and intrinsic buy-in from the communities we work with, and our realistic project timelines to ensure a high rate of completed and sustained projects across the globe.
How long does a Seacology project take to complete?
The building part of a typical project takes a year to complete. The environmental commitment usually lasts 10 years or longer.
Seacology projects have two targets, a community goal and a conservation goal. Community goals often include construction of critical infrastructure, things like solar panels or schools, and take on average 1-2 years to complete. The conservation aspects take more time, anywhere from ten years to in perpetuity, due to the nature of rehabilitation and conservation.
For sponsorship purposes we provide updates throughout the duration of the community goal.
Why does Seacology only work with islands?
Island species are especially vulnerable to extinction. Almost 40 percent of critically endangered animals live on islands. Island communities are under constant pressure to boost economic development, even at the cost of environmental damage. Many of them are overlooked by environmental and development organizations. How much do projects typically cost?
