Seacology project wins United Nations climate change award

September 28, 2018

We’re very excited to announce that Seacology’s nationwide mangrove conservation project in Sri Lanka has been named a winner in the 2018 Momentum for Change climate action awards! Momentum for Change is an initiative under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, seeking innovative solutions to the challenges posed by a changing climate.

Our project is among 15 efforts by governments, businesses, and nonprofit organizations addressing climate change at the local, regional, and national levels. Our Sri Lanka Mangrove Conservation Project, a collaboration with Sri Lankan NGO Sudeesa and the Sri Lankan government, was among four recipients of the award in the “Planetary Health” category.

“These inspirational leaders, from communities, governments, businesses and organizations, come from all corners of the globe and all levels of society,” says United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. “Their winning projects range from transformative financial investments to women-led solutions to protect people and the planet. Through their leadership and creativity, we see essential change.”
