Seacology welcomes new field representatives for Canada, Croatia

January 28, 2025

We’re excited to welcome two new field representatives to the Seacology team! These two dedicated conservation professionals will lead our first projects to protect island ecosystems and support island communities in Canada and Croatia.

Woman wearing knit cap with snow-covered island in backgroundPam McGarel is a dedicated sustainability expert with a passion for travel, education, and community development. With an MSc in Tourism & International Development, she brings both academic insight and hands-on experience to environmental initiatives.

Based in Squamish, British Columbia, Pam is the Founder of Mosaic Earth Travel, where she works closely with rural and remote communities to develop educational experiences that connect travelers with Canada’s natural world and Indigenous cultures. Her previous work in strategic partnerships and sustainability consulting has taken her from the Arctic to Antarctica, always with the mission to support environmental conservation and cultural preservation through travel.

Alongside her work, Pam loves to get out hiking, sea kayaking, and snowboarding in the wilderness of BC.

Marija Purgar Filjak is a research assistant at the Ruđer Bošković Institute’s Division for Marine and Environmental Research, working in the Laboratory for Informatics and Environmental Modelling. She is pursuing a PhD in Oceanology at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, focusing on exploring and modeling bacterial abundance near fish farms in the Adriatic Sea. Currently, she is a Fulbright Visiting Student Researcher at Emory University, where she is investigating transparency in ecology and evolutionary biology research.

Her academic journey began with a master’s degree in Nature and Environmental Protection, where she developed a passion for understanding and safeguarding marine ecosystems. Dedicated to open science, she actively promotes the use of FAIR data and research transparency to address the impacts of climate change on seas and oceans, fostering scientific discoveries and driving positive change in local communities.

We look forward to working with Pam and Marija to develop great projects and community partnerships in their countries!
