Conservation benefit: 400-acre forest preserve

Community benefit: Construction of a kindergarten and medical dispensary

Date Approved: 11.2003

Forest

This project protects forest, preventing the release of greenhouse gases and reducing erosion that damages coastal and ocean ecosystems.

Nasigasiga is located 40 miles from the nearest town. In June 2003, a group from Seacology visited the village to officially open a new water tank and delivery system, which Seacology had funded in exchange for the establishment of a 332-acre forest reserve.

Nasigasiga is now willing to set aside another 400 acres of pristine forest for a period of 20 years. In exchange, Seacology will fund construction of a much-needed kindergarten and medical dispensary.

Project Updates

July 2004

The foundation was laid with former Seacology board member Tim Toben in February 2004. The kindergarten and dispensary were completed in March 2004. Seacology’s 2004 expedition to Fiji visited Nasigasiga to dedicate the opening of the kindergarten and dispensary.
