SUMMARY:Seacology expedition to Fiji
DESCRIPTION:Experience the natural splendor and famous hospitality of the South Pacific with Seacology and the California Academy of Sciences. \n  \nWelcome to Fiji\nDownload our brochure\nThe spectacular Fijian Islands are known for picturesque coastlines\, verdant rainforests\, and welcoming people—it’s a place where everyone should set foot at least once! This December\, Seacology and the California Academy of Sciences invite you to join us for an exclusive expedition to the island of Vanua Levu. \nFor more than two decades\, Seacology has worked with dozens of Fijian communities to protect vulnerable ecosystems\, improve people’s quality of life\, and build resilience against increasingly severe tropical storms. In this travel partnership with the California Academy of Sciences\, you can see up-close how both organizations are making a difference in this beautiful country. We will visit the people of Nukubalavu Village\, longtime partners in Seacology’s conservation work\, for a festive traditional celebration with the community. Nightly presentations from Seacology and the Academy will provide a deeper understanding and appreciation for Fiji’s unique environment and the inspiring work being done to save it. \nPlease join us! \n  \nOur accommodations\nFollow the Hibiscus Highway east from Savusavu to find the Koro Sun Resort\, situated on a private lagoon on Vanua Levu’s stunning southern coast. \nYour reservation includes meals at the resort’s three restaurants\, masterfully prepared using locally sourced ingredients. The Koro Sun offers a number of amenities including a spa\, golf course\, tennis and volleyball courts\, and more (an additional fee is required for some activities). The family-friendly resort features a kids club\, which includes a nanny service for children three years and younger and supervised recreational activities for youth up to age 12. Multiple types of lodging are available: \n\n\n\n\n© Koro Sun Resort\n\n© Koro Sun Resort\n\n\nGarden bure\nSurrounded by lush gardens\, these tranquil bures are available with one or two bedrooms. Each unit offers air conditioning\, a luxurious stone shower and private courtyard.\nWaterfront and floating bures\nDip your toes in the warm South Pacific from the comfort of your private deck or porch. These spacious units offer expansive views of and instant access to the lagoon.\n\n\n\n  \nExplore land and sea\nThe in-house dive operator serves divers and snorkelers of all skill levels\, and offers expert instruction for those new to diving. The resort is conveniently located near some of Vanua Levu’s best dive sites\, including the Namena Marine Reserve and Somosomo Straits. You’ll be mesmerized by the brilliant colors of soft corals and schools of tropical fish. Lucky divers can spot four species of endangered sea turtles and may even catch a glimse of a whale or dolphin\, which are known to frequent the area. Paddleboards and kayaks are also available to rent. \nThe Koro Sun offers abundant options to explore the land as well. Complimentary activities include group hikes through rainforest trails to roaring waterfalls and cycling along the coast. Guided excursions to the town of Savusavu and other nearby attractions are available for an additional fee. \n  \nSeacology project visit\nOur work in picturesque Nukubalavu goes back to 2007\, when we funded construction of the village’s kindergarten and preschool in exchange for the establishment of a 25\,600-acre marine reserve. Nine years later\, the school and many other buildings in the village were heavily damaged by Cyclone Winston\, the strongest storm ever recorded in the southern hemisphere. Upholding our commitment to the community and its conservation efforts\, Seacology funded the repair and expansion of the school in 2017. It reopened after serving as a temporary shelter for a family rendered homeless by the storm. \nOur partnership continues to this day. Last year\, we funded new classroom furniture and other supplies\, helping improve the educational experience for local kids. \n\nItinerary\nDecember 4: Transfer from airport to the Koro Sun\nDecember 4-11: Stay at the Koro Sun Resort\, visit to Nukubalavu village\, daily presentations by Seacology and California Academy of Sciences staff\nDecember 12: Depart Koro Sun\, transfer back to airport \n  \nBook your spot\nTrip fees: $2\,310-$6\,361 per guest \nFinal cost depends on room type and single vs. double occupancy booking. \nThis price includes eight nights of lodging\, all meals with one drink at dinner per day\, round-trip airport transfers\, and Seacology project visit. \nThe reservation does not include airfare\, scuba diving expenses\, tips\, additional alcoholic beverages and non-complimentary resort activities. \nSeacology recommends that guests obtain travel insurance. \nA non-refundable deposit of $750 per room is needed to hold your place. The balance of your fees is due by September 18\, 2023. \nRates are based on the current Fiji Dollar/US Dollar conversion at the time of booking and subject to change until final payment is made. \nFor more information and to reserve your spot\, please contact Mike Hoppe at Reef & Rainforest\, Dive & Adventure Travel: \n1 (800) 794-9767 Extension 309\nmike@reefrainforest.com \n

SUMMARY:Seacology expedition to Bonaire
DESCRIPTION:Seacology invites you to join our expedition to one of the Caribbean’s top diving destinations\, the island of Bonaire. \nDownload the trip brochure\nOne of the so-called ABC Islands (Aruba\, Bonaire\, Curaçao) this island in the Dutch Caribbean offers mild\, warm weather year-round\, stunning ocean views\, and abundant wildlife above and below the surface. \nOur guests will enjoy the exceptional comfort and service of one of Bonaire’s finest resorts and explore the fringing reef that lines the island’s west coast from our private chartered dive boat. We will also see up-close how Seacology is working to preserve the unique environment and biodiversity of the island. \n  \nOur accommodations\nOn the outskirts of the capital city of Kralendijk\, the Bellafonte Luxury Oceanfront Hotel offers panoramic views of the Caribbean and unmatched comfort in spacious apartment-style suites. \nAll suites have king size beds and air conditioning\, and are accessible by stairs or elevator. Ground-floor suites have direct access to the pool\, sundeck and pier. Complimentary daily housekeeping service\, amenities\, linens\, and toiletries are all included.\nThe hotel is just a short walk from several restaurants and bars and a five-minute drive from the bustling city center with an assortment of shops\, local artisans\, and more. \n  \nSeacology’s work in Bonaire\nSeacology began working in the Dutch Caribbean in 2020. Our first project in the region played a key role in saving one of the world’s rarest trees—the bonaire palm—from extinction.\nThe Bonaire palm\, Sabal lougheediana\, was only identified as a distinct species in 2019\, but at the time of its discovery it was already critically endangered. Found only in one small area of the island\, the species’ population had dwindled to 25 mature trees\, and goats and donkeys introduced to the island by humans were eating young saplings before they had a chance to reach maturity. Seacology funded a barrier fence around the trees’ habitat to keep these hungry grazers away. \nThe project was an immediate success\, with several new trees taking root in the first year. It prompted further investment in protecting the trees and the local government is now exploring the establishment of a larger reserve for the Bonaire palm. \nOur group will visit this site\, along with our new project at Lac Bay\, to see our conservation work in action. \n  \nDiving and snorkeling\nWith its healthy coral reefs\, abundant marine life\, and mysterious shipwrecks\, Bonaire boasts some of the Caribbean’s best diving options. \nWe’ll be chartering a private boat from top-rated local dive operator Div’Ocean. Each morning of our six-day travel package includes two-tank dives to explore Bonaire’s most fascinating underwater sites. \n  \nItinerary\nJune 17 Recommended arrival date\, check into Bellafonte Luxury Oceanfront Hotel \nJune 18-23 Two dives each morning\, Seacology project site visits \nJune 24/25 Suggested check-out and departure (hotel bookings determined by guests) \n  \nBook your spot\nThis trip is limited to eight guests (the capacity of our dive boat). \nPlease first contact Duane Silverstein at duane@seacology.org to confirm availability. Once we confirm we will send a $1\,000 invoice through Stripe\, which will cover diving expenses and transportation to and from the dive boat. Half of the deposit is refundable if you cancel prior to February 1\, 2023. After receipt of the deposit you will be given instructions on how to make your hotel reservations. \nThe $1\,000 fee covers diving and Seacology site visits but does not include international airfare\, meals\, or lodging. \nTrip insurance is highly recommended.

SUMMARY:Seacology expedition to Borneo — SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:On this expedition to the world’s third-largest island\, you’ll visit a Seacology project\, meet gentle great apes in an orangutan rehabilitation facility\, and see more amazing wildlife in Borneo’s spectacular rainforests. \nUnique Borneo\nClick to view our trip brochure\nThe calls of birds and monkeys echoing through the forest. Vast labyrinths of rivers and streams. Green mountains disappearing into the fog. Hundreds of communities speaking distinct languages. Few places on Earth can match the biological\, cultural\, and geographic diversity of Borneo. \nSeacology invites you to a ten-day journey through Malaysian Borneo\, our first public trip to the island in many years. \nAs Borneo’s ancient rainforests face unprecedented threats from expanding oil palm plantations and logging\, our visit is part of the solution. Borneo’s growing eco-tourism sector presents a path to sustainable economic development and long-term opportunity for its indigenous communities. Our expedition combines the comfort of some of the island’s best eco-lodges with the adventure of exploring Sabah state’s dense jungles and winding rivers. We will visit one of our partner communities to see up-close how Seacology is protecting irreplaceable forest habitat while supporting sustainable livelihoods. And we will meet with local conservation experts to tour sanctuaries for some of Borneo’s iconic wildlife including orangutans and sun bears. \nThe New York Times named this part of Borneo as one of its top places to see in 2020\, and our travel package will be a unique and intimate way to experience this unforgettable destination. We hope you’ll join us. \nOur accommodations\nOn the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu\, Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa will host us for the first four nights of our expedition. Enjoy the resort’s six restaurants and bars while taking in stunning views of the South China Sea. \nA short walk from the boundary of the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve\, The Sepilok Nature Resort combines local style and contemporary luxury. Between visits to the surrounding wildlife reserves\, relax in your bungalow or enjoy the large deck overlooking the Kinabatangan River. \nNestled in Sabah’s dense rainforest\, the Sukau Rainforest Lodge is a model of the modern eco-lodge. Recognized by National Geographic as one of the Unique Lodges of the World\, the Sukau upholds the highest standards for sustainable business practices and maintains partnerships with conservation experts and local communities. \n  \nOur project\nIn 2019\, Seacology began a partnership with the people of Kolosunan\, a small village in the mountains of northern Borneo. With limited economic opportunities\, such communities often face pressure to sell off their precious forest lands to make ends meet. But this community came up with an unconventional but potentially lucrative solution: birds’ nests! \nBird’s nest soup is a delicacy in east Asia. Its namesake key ingredient is the abandoned nest of a species of swiftlet abundant in Borneo. The birds usually nest in caves\, and people have collected their nests for many years. But the birds will also nest in structures built just for them. With a Seacology grant\, the community is building a swiftlet hut\, a small\, dark building where the birds can nest and raise their young. After the babies fledge\, community members will collect the nests and sell them—for a good profit—on the international market. This will bring much-needed income to the village. \nIn exchange for our support\, Kolosunan’s people have agreed to protect more than 4\,000 acres of forest\, an important watershed and wildlife habitat\, for 15 years. Our expedition will visit this beautiful mountainous area and meet the local leaders committed to protecting it. \n  \nItinerary\nDay 1: Arrive in Kota Kinabalu.
