SUMMARY:Raja Ampat film to screen at International Maritime Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to announce that The Underwater Treasurers of Raja Ampat\, a short film Seacology produced\, will have its first public screening at this year’s International Maritime Film Festival in Bucksport\, Maine! \nDirected by longtime Seacology collaborator Stefan Ruenzel\, the film tells the story of a remote Indonesian community’s efforts to protect the marine ecosystems of Raja Ampat\, one of the world’s greatest biodiversity hotspots. It introduces us to Memet\, a young boy who attends the Seacology-funded school in Fafanlap Village\, and his uncle who steadfastly works to guard the marine reserve established by our project. \nThe film will screen in Bucksport on Saturday\, September 28\, the final day of the three day festival\, and then will be available on-demand throughout October. Our first project in the region played a key role in saving one of the world’s rarest trees—the bonaire palm—from extinction.\nThe Bonaire palm\, Sabal lougheediana\, was only identified as a distinct species in 2019\, but at the time of its discovery it was already critically endangered. Found only in one small area of the island\, the species’ population had dwindled to 25 mature trees\, and goats and donkeys introduced to the island by humans were eating young saplings before they had a chance to reach maturity. Seacology funded a barrier fence around the trees’ habitat to keep these hungry grazers away. \nThe project was an immediate success\, with several new trees taking root in the first year. It prompted further investment in protecting the trees and the local government is now exploring the establishment of a larger reserve for the Bonaire palm. \nOur group will visit this site\, along with our new project at Lac Bay\, to see our conservation work in action. \n  \nDiving and snorkeling\nWith its healthy coral reefs\, abundant marine life\, and mysterious shipwrecks\, Bonaire boasts some of the Caribbean’s best diving options. \nWe’ll be chartering a private boat from top-rated local dive operator Div’Ocean. Few places on Earth can match the biological\, cultural\, and geographic diversity of Borneo. \nSeacology invites you to a ten-day journey through Malaysian Borneo\, our first public trip to the island in many years. \nAs Borneo’s ancient rainforests face unprecedented threats from expanding oil palm plantations and logging\, our visit is part of the solution. Borneo’s growing eco-tourism sector presents a path to sustainable economic development and long-term opportunity for its indigenous communities. Our expedition combines the comfort of some of the island’s best eco-lodges with the adventure of exploring Sabah state’s dense jungles and winding rivers. We will visit one of our partner communities to see up-close how Seacology is protecting irreplaceable forest habitat while supporting sustainable livelihoods. And we will meet with local conservation experts to tour sanctuaries for some of Borneo’s iconic wildlife including orangutans and sun bears. \nThe New York Times named this part of Borneo as one of its top places to see in 2020\, and our travel package will be a unique and intimate way to experience this unforgettable destination. We hope you’ll join us. \nOur accommodations\nOn the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu\, Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa will host us for the first four nights of our expedition. Enjoy the resort’s six restaurants and bars while taking in stunning views of the South China Sea. \nA short walk from the boundary of the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve\, The Sepilok Nature Resort combines local style and contemporary luxury. Between visits to the surrounding wildlife reserves\, relax in your bungalow or enjoy the large deck overlooking the Kinabatangan River. \nNestled in Sabah’s dense rainforest\, the Sukau Rainforest Lodge is a model of the modern eco-lodge. Recognized by National Geographic as one of the Unique Lodges of the World\, the Sukau upholds the highest standards for sustainable business practices and maintains partnerships with conservation experts and local communities. \n  \nOur project\nIn 2019\, Seacology began a partnership with the people of Kolosunan\, a small village in the mountains of northern Borneo. With limited economic opportunities\, such communities often face pressure to sell off their precious forest lands to make ends meet. But this community came up with an unconventional but potentially lucrative solution: birds’ nests! \nBird’s nest soup is a delicacy in east Asia. Its namesake key ingredient is the abandoned nest of a species of swiftlet abundant in Borneo. The birds usually nest in caves\, and people have collected their nests for many years. But the birds will also nest in structures built just for them. With a Seacology grant\, the community is building a swiftlet hut\, a small\, dark building where the birds can nest and raise their young. After the babies fledge\, community members will collect the nests and sell them—for a good profit—on the international market. This will bring much-needed income to the village. \nIn exchange for our support\, Kolosunan’s people have agreed to protect more than 4\,000 acres of forest\, an important watershed and wildlife habitat\, for 15 years. Our expedition will visit this beautiful mountainous area and meet the local leaders committed to protecting it. \n  \nItinerary\nDay 1: Arrive in Kota Kinabalu. Overnight at Shangri’s La Tanjung Aru Resort – Kinabalu Sea View. \nDay 2: Meet former Seacology Prize recipient Banie Lasimbang at our nonprofit partners’ micro-hydro workshop\, meet with PACOS Trust\, which supports indigenous communities. SUMMARY:2020 Seacology Prize Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:On his native Wasini Island\, Omar Abdallah Juma brought together skeptical members of the fishing community\, government institutions\, NGOs\, and other stakeholders to create a successful marine reserve. His efforts provided the blueprint for other locally managed protected areas along the Kenyan coast\, promoting sustainable fisheries and helping to preserve the area’s threatened biodiversity.\nWe will honor Juma’s achievements and present him with the award in our first fully online Seacology Prize Ceremony on Thursday\, October 1.
