In January 2001, a Seacology expedition traveled to Belize, where participants explored the islands and reefs off this Central American nation. Here, Wil Maheia of the Belizean nonprofit organization TIDE makes a presentation to Seacology board member Shari Sant Plummer, supporter Wolcott Henry, Seacology president Ken Murdock and executive director Duane Silverstein. Seacology awarded TIDE $25,000 to construct a ranger station on Abalone Caye in the Port Honduras Marine Reserve. Since the construction of the ranger station, manatee poaching in the area has been virtually eliminated. |
