MALDIVES, Ungoofaaru Island - June 2006
Establish a waste management system in return for a total ban on using coral for any building purpose, and extracting sand for any purpose for the duration of 10 years
Ungoofaaru is a small island with a population of 3,500 people. Seacology will provide funds to equip 210 households with a garbage bin with four sections for all the different types of waste – food, plastic, glass and metals – and to provide 10 large four-sectioned collection containers to be placed in each district. Seacology will also purchase 10 bicycles with a cart attached for the collectors of the garbage. The biodegradable products will be composted and the non-biodegradable products will be sent to a facility which can manage that waste. In return, Ungoofaaru islanders will make a total ban on collecting coral or using it for building purposes; they will also have a total ban on collecting sand from the beaches for making cement, both for a duration of 10 years. *
UPDATE January 2007 - Members of the Seacology expedition to the Maldives met with the Atoll Chief and project leader in October 2006. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2006 or early 2007.
