BELIZE, Abalone Caye Island, Port Honduras - June 2006
Construction of a lookout tower and fire tower in the Port Honduras Marine Reserve and Payne's Creek National Park
(Belize 2000 project page)
Construction of the towers will enable local NGO TIDE to better survey the marine reserve to prevent poaching and to better detect forest fires started by hunters trying to induce grass growth for deer.
UPDATE January 2007 - The plans and materials were purchased in July 2006. Construction was postponed until after the rainy season. They plan to begin construction in April 2007.
UPDATE June 2007 - One tower began construction in May 2007 and the second tower will be constructed once transportation can be arranged.
UPDATE October 2007 - After months of weather delays a fire/lookout tower was constructed five miles from the park's ranger station in a strategic location to allow rangers to monitor the start of wild fires that destroy large tracts of pine savannah and the home to endangered species such as the yellow-headed parrot.
