Haiti La Serre Project Completed
by Alexandra Paul
On Sept. 7, 1996, inhabitants of the small Haitian community of La Serre joyously gathered around their new well. A prayer was offered, and one by one, each of the participants expressed their gratitude... something they had long dreamed for had finally become a reality. The new well, solar pump and water storage tank were funded by a generous donation from Nu Skin International, to Seacology. The donation was a part of Nu Skin's Force for Good Campaign. The most incredible development in the aftermath of the Haiti La Serre project was the new found sense of possibility that has empowered the individuals in the area to pursue ways to improve their standard of living. The new well has returned hope to the residents of La Serre. They have formed a council to seek ways of meeting other community needs: schools, electricity, water for irrigation and additional sources of employment. They are banding together to achieve their common goals.
I watched as children and adults came to the well to drink water, bathe, wash clothes and carry away bucket after bucket of water. I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm brought on by the successful completion of the Haiti La Serre relief project. It was wonderful to be a part of a positive event in this community's history.
