Seacology is run by a very small staff of devoted individuals. Because our staff is so small, we are able to work very efficiently with no red tape or bureaucracy, ensuring that your donation dollars will go to help island environments and cultures.

Duane Silverstein

For 20 years prior to heading Seacology Duane was the executive director of the Goldman Fund, one of California 's largest philanthropic foundations. He also headed the Goldman Environmental Prize, which has been dubbed the "Nobel Prize of the Environment" by National Geographic and news media from many nations around the world. Silverstein has met with many presidents of the United States, secretaries-general of the United Nations and heads of state throughout the world. His work has been covered in newspapers and periodicals as diverse as TIME, The Bangkok Post, The San Francisco Chronicle and Rodale's Scuba Diving magazine. Articles he has written have appeared in Asian Geographic, Fathoms, and Asian Diver among many other newspapers and magazines. The New York Times has called Silverstein "one of the world's leading island explorers." He is a National Fellow of The Explorers Club.

Susan Racanelli

Susan's lifelong interest in wildlife preservation and the environment began while working with exotic animals for the entertainment industry in her early twenties. She traveled throughout and lived in Europe, South America, the Caribbean and Africa while working in theme parks, television and motion pictures. Susan returned to school and received a degree in French from San Jose State University, afterwards attending Santa Clara University's graduate business school. She then focused on marketing with firms in California's Silicon Valley, San Francisco and the resort coast of Carmel, Pebble Beach and the Monterey Peninsula. Susan's work with Seacology began in 2004 and brought together her passion for wildlife conservation, travel, foreign cultures and her skills for finding financial resources through marketing and public relations. As development director, she is responsible for fundraising, event planning, leading groups to visit Seacology's island projects and inspiring support for its important mission.

Ellen Kamoe

Ellen graduated from UCLA magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology in 2003. She is of Hawaiian descent and studied abroad in Samoa in 2002, again returning to the islands in 2006 with a trip through Polynesia. Ellen has worked in development for non-profit organizations since 2004 and is the former Managing Director of Just Theater, a small local theater company. Ellen is also currently pursuing a teaching certification in Iyengar-style yoga from The Yoga Room in Berkeley. She joined the Seacology staff in 2006 and is responsible for grant writing and research, event planning and support, and assisting the development director. Ellen is delighted to work for an organization that values the opinions and skills of indigenous island peoples, collaborating to preserve their cultures and environments.

Emily Klokkevold

Emily Klokkevold

Emily, born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, has always been passionate about the environment. She received her BS in Environmental Sciences with an emphasis in Environmental Management (magna cum laude) from Northern Arizona University in 2003. She began work with Seacology that December. Emily has experience working on many different websites, including designing and building the inaugural site for the Office of Professional Development and Communications at the University of Florida. In 2006, she traveled to Russia to help teenagers at a school in Izhevsk with their English speaking skills. With Seacology, Emily is responsible for updating and maintaining the website, as well as assisting other members of the staff with various financial, fundraising, travel, dissemination and other administration projects.

Karen Peterson

Karen has been with Seacology since it became a staffed organization in 1999. Karen has been working in the international environmental movement for more than fifteen years, with experience ranging from small village-based organizations to world-renowned foundations. She has worked with all aspects of non-profit administration and management, including grant making and writing, media communications, and financial accountability. Karen's duties at Seacology including working with our field representatives to identify and monitor projects; maintaining our digital library of project photos; preparing PowerPoint presentations showcasing Seacology's work for a wide array of audiences; editing and designing Seacology's annual report and newsletter; and maintaining Seacology's computer network. Karen is the president of the Crocket Community Foundation in Crockett, California. To the left, Karen is pictured in Madagascar with a lemur on her shoulder.

Lisa Rosenthal

Lisa administers Seacology’s financial activities and coordinates procedures with Seacology’s growing number of field representatives to implement projects. She holds a BA in Cultural Anthropology from University of California, Berkeley, with an emphasis on conservation and resource management and the impact of the arrangement of private and public space on social control and identity. She also conducted graduate studies in Cultural Anthropology at San Francisco State University. Lisa came to Seacology in 2000 after eleven years of professional experience in non-profit administration and management in the public policy research field. Her previous experience included coordinating and analyzing qualitative research studies, grant writing, and general non-profit financial administration. Lisa has also been a co-chair on several arts program committees in the Berkeley Unified School District.
